Dear Tony,
I just corrected the listening test that we did today and I got 35 out of 40!
I advise everybody to practise the listening in the learning zone it is of great help. I feel it has helped me alot plus your hand outs.
I am also feeling more comfortable with the writing tasks, thanks to the hand outs you are giving us and the writing that we do in class. It has been extremely helpful. I am very pleased with the band 7 that I have been getting in writing and hope that I will be able to do this well on the day of the IELTS exam. Inshallah!
Yours sincerely,
Maryam

Super work, Maryam! See how sheer hard work, allied to talent and aptitude, gets its just reward.

It is kind of weird, how the abler students really push themselves hard and practise far more rigorously than their less talented class mates. Any explanations why?

Yes, the Learning Zone is a terrific help - you have to put in the hours there to see the benefit.

As for the Writing, both you and Mona got Band 8.0 OVERALL(Allhamdillileh!) for last night's task 1 and 2 writing. You both wrote fluently, interestingly, relevantly, coherently and accurately. I was impressed (that is praise indeed, young ladies!). I very rarely give band 8.0 for IELTS writing and such scores usually come towards the end of the course when students learn from their mistakes and do it the right way (Tony's way!).

Well done everyone, for their attendance and hard work. Please do not feel despondent if you do not seem to be making progress - it takes time and what Sir Winston Churchill said so memorably, "Blood, toil, tears and sweat."

See you tonight in ROOM 8, remember!

Bring your pencils, sharpeners, highlighters and Insight books.

We have three doctors in the class if all gets too much to take...

Tony

Dear Tony,
Thank you for the encouragement :-)
Today's work was very demanding and it gave me a clear idea of what I will be facing during the real exam. It is extremely difficult to concentrate for three straight hours.
Something very funny happened to me. All through the writing task 2 I strained myself to use an alternative word to "disabled" but my mind was blank. I simply did not remember the word "handicaped"!! How could this happen!! I only remembered it in the car on the way home, which was too late!!!
Yours sincerely,
Maryam

Hi Maryam!

Yes, IELTS 'bites' and it does not take any prisoners, does it?

Indeed, there are no 'free breakfasts' on offer and some tears might be spilled after last night's listening and reading scores are divulged. The Kleenex will be handy.

As a matter of fact, the word "handicapped" is not so popular these days, it has negative connotations. You used the term "special needs" and this is MUCH more 'politically correct'. While neither you, nor Mona scaled the heights of the previous writing, you only climb Everest once, or do you?

Note for SAEEDA: I have your pencil case in my safekeeping and will give it to you tonight or ask Mutaz to pass it on to you at SKMC.

Bye for now

Tony
