writing task 1 + Tony's comments 15 Feb...

Dear Tony,

I did a writing task 1 from the Insight into IELTS book, page 77.

The diagram illustrates the water cycle process.

Ground water flows into lakes, rivers and seas. The water stored in the sea evaporates into invisible water vapour which is caused by the sun's heat. Clouds are formed when the vapour cools. In the meantime the wind moves the clouds and they cool even further which causes rain.

The transpiration from plants and trees also releases vapour into the sky which forms clouds too. And again when these clouds get cold, it causes rain. All the water gets carried downstream by rivers which flow into the sea. And so the cycle repeats itself. The diagram shows that evaporation takes place from stored water in lakes, rivers and seas. At the same time transpiration from plants and trees also contributes greatly to this cycle.

I can make the conclusion that the more trees and greenery we plant in our environment, the more rainfall we will have. Therefore, this can have a considerable effect on the water cycle and climate patterns.

Best Regards,
Maryam

Bravo, Maryam! I did not have the diagram in front of me, but you 'painted a picture' in words of this process. Try to analyse your SVA grammar mistakes. Other Academic IELTS candidates, bear in mind that you might well have to interpret a diagram which describes a scientific, technical or natural process. You follow the same formula of giving the descriptive facts in a selective manner and analyse the main trends / patterns. At the end you make an intelligent comment about the overall process a a whole.

In other words, be prepared for a diagram, not just a chart / graph or table!

Good luck, you all!

Tony
