Maryam's Essay + Tony's comments

See my version below

Dear Tony,
Thank you for your comments on my last essay. I wrote another one on topic number 6.

The question is:
To what extent is the use of animals in scientific research acceptable?

Animals are used widely around the world by many organisations for research. Animal testing has become a routine practice by international companies for their product developments. In my opinion we do need to use animals for scientific research specially in the medical field. But the use of animals in research should not be carried out unnecessarily or be misused. I would like to use pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies as examples to justify my point why animals need not be used in scientific research unless it is of utmost importance.

The medical field has advanced to high levels due to many scientific research that are carried out by pharmaceutical companies. Many of these companies compete with eachother and therefore, try to always stay on top in the market by carrying out numerous tests on animals that provide the best subjects next to humans. These results are vital in development of medicine that is required for the cure of many diseases that are faced by doctors and people in society everyday. For example, animals used in scientific research has provided an enormous help in the development of medication for cancer and HIV patients.

On the other hand, there are many cosmetic companies that carry out their research on aimals unnecesarily. For example, I do not think it is important for products such as lipstick to be tested on animals. A lot of animals are sacrificed everyday for the development of ordinary cosmetic products, such as, moisturising creams. I personally prefer to shop from stores like the Body Shop that are against animal testing, which I find very appealing.

I would like to make the conclusion that animals should not be taken for granted. We should have respect for animal life and should not misuse the right to practice animal testing in scientific research. In my opinion, animals should only be used as experiments when they can be of utmost importance and can have an enormous affect on results and outcomes of research. The use of animals in scientific research is acceptable only when their use as experiment objects could provide valuable information to scientists, specially in the field of medicine, that could assist in finding cure to diseases.

Thanks Maryam!

A very compelling essay! I feel the introduction and conclusion need to be shorter and sharper. Mona has a very clinical approach, your style is more discursive and elaborate - the contrast is very interesting.

I am having the weekend 'off' with my family and will try to look at this essay and Mona's in a quiet moment or two tomorrow morning.

In the evening we are going to Dubai for nadine and Zeena to see "Cirque du Soleil" - the second time for Zeena and the first for Nadine. My wife Aida and I shall wander through Ibn Battuta Mall (our favourite in Dubai) while the girls enjoy the spectacle.

What have you all been up to?

I see very little student - student interaction on the weblog, which is a great shame. remember the 11 comments Mais AlBassam got from her fellows when she achieved the magic 7.0 + 7.0 + 7.0 + 7.0 = 7.0 Overall - wonderful memories! Some of you are already fading away... What a pity!

Good night
